BTG 2009, Week 9

holy cow did we all suck all week.  not a single person finished above .500 for the week.  fredo was the only one to win any money with a measly 25 bucks, and only helene got the big bet right.  of course, this is not news for “erik”, but the rest of us had been enjoying quite the roll there.  but if you think about it, it makes sense because we’re about half way through the season and vegas has the teams pretty much completely figured out.  whatever the case, here are the standings so far.

09Week8

helene continues to keep that lead, and pretty soon here if none of us make a move, it’s going to be hard to catch her in the standings.  at the very least, “erik” will have a difficult time catching helene, which should make for a good time in carlisle pennsylvania.  in any case, i got a whole lot of nothing this week as i dislike this week’s board almost as much as i hate last week’s.  i’m in full panic mode as both of my fantasy teams lost last week as well.  football can be a cruel mistress.  in any case, number’s from caesars and home team in caps.

kc (+6.5) over JAX, o/u – 42, chiefs (+220) jaguars (-300)
i’m wondering why the chiefs haven’t been classified as an unmitigated disaster this season. one win, a new coach that doesn’t seem to be able to get his team to stay focused (see larry johnson), and a new big money quarterback that hasn’t done crap this year. really, are they any better off than the browns or the raiders? yet here i am still taking them over the jags because of my irrational hate of jack del rio.

CIN (+3) over bal, o/u – 43.5, bengals (+120) ravens (-140)
no love for the bengals from vegas. stay away kiddos. stay away.

hou (+9) over IND, o/u – 48.5, texans (+300) colts (-400)
the texans continue to mystify me, and i have no idea if their defense can prevent peyton from inserting his nose into their collective ears, especially on the road. but i think losing sanders is a big blow for the colts’ defense, and i think the texans will be able to play keep away from the colts with a new two headed rushing attack. but to remind you, i’ve gotten exactly one texans’ game correct this year.

ATL (-10) over was, o/u – 41.5, falcons (-550) tatonka (+375)
if dan snyder is this crazy now, imagine what he’ll be like when he’s al davis’ age.

TAM (+9.5) over gb, o/u – 43.5, buccaneers (+325) packers (-450)
the packers are playing pretty much the way i expected them to play at the beginning of the season. losing to the vikings in lambeau in what was ostensibly their biggest game in 10 years tells me that something is amiss in green bay. for being considered a good qb, rodgers sure does take a lot of dumb sacks.  at this point in the season, i would like eric to give me an assessment of his team’s play so far.  lemme hear from ya hayseed!

ari (+3) over CHI, o/u – 44.5, cardinals (+130) bears (-150)
i suppose that this line has trap written all over it, especially since christ abandoned kurt warner last week against the panthers. but trust me, god hates jay cutler much more than he hates phoenix.

mia (+10.5) over NE, o/u – 47, dolphins (+400) patriots (-600)
another line that seems strange to me.

NO (-13.5) over car, o/u – 51.5, saints (off) panthers (off)
what a complete bs cover by atlanta last week. it’s almost as if the falcons were playing for the cover instead of the win which begs the question, is mike ryan betting on football games? not really. the question that it raises is, is mike ryan a little overrated? and the answer is of course is that he is overrated, all coaches are.

SEA (-10) over det, o/u – 42.5, seahawks (-550) lions (+375)
sorry “erik”. i wanted to take the lions, i really did, but losing to the rams? my conscience prevents me from taking them ever again this year.

ten (+4) over SFO, o/u – 41, titans (+170) niners (-200)
i know i was arguing over the merits of alex smith over vince young last week, and young got the win and smith lost, but this line seems strange to me to. actually, you know what, i’m switching my pick to the titans. i have a feeling that vegas knows something about this game that i don’t. what the eff. give me a big bet on this one.

NYG (-5) over sdo, o/u – 47.5, eff the yankees (-240) chargers (+190)
no idea. no idea. just going with west coast team playing on the east coast theory.

PHI (-3) over dal, o/u – 48, eagles (-140) cowboys (+120)
aren’t we all lucky that the two best games of the week are the sunday night and monday night game? tony romo under the big lights on the road? no thanks.

pit (-3) over DEN, o/u – 39.5, steelers (-150) broncos (+130)
this week’s board is brutal. and with that, i’m going to bet against a decent team that is the home dog. normally i would say that a decent team isn’t going to put together two crappy games in a row. but i asked myself, can i see kyle orton putting together two games in a row? and the answer is yes, yes i can.

sorry for a post lacking in entertainment value, i’m just not very psyched about football this week.  i’ll make it up to you next week.

My analysis of the Packers: Championship

Yeah, Rodgers takes too many sacks and gets too greedy at times when he should just take the check down route(s). Still, he’s minimized interceptions and he’s still an unexperienced QB. I never liked the defensive move to the 3-4, if only because McCarthy and Thompson had their chance to make the change years ago when they came in to their respective roles. It is kind of hard to get a good read on the Packers since the teams they’ve beat are among the worst in the league (CHI, STL, DET, CLE) and they’ve lost twice to one of the best teams (MIN) and one of this season’s surprsing teams (CIN). I expect they’ll fight for 9-7/10-6 and a #6 playoff berth.

You might be wondering, dear reader, how it could be that a once-great football genius is faring so terribly this season.

    Well, fear not.

I can’t reveal details at this early date. However, I can tell you that some people in the National Football League contacted me before the start of the season. They promised to make it worth my while if I distracted my readers with some, shall we say, less than genius picks.

So, I’ve been intentionally picking teams that won’t cover the point spread. It’s working perfectly.

In other news, the house has spotted me $200 bob’s bucks in exchange for only one handy, so I can continue to rock your world. Here we go.
